Scrutineering at Brands Hatch


Our mobile Dyno has many functions, when it’s not being used for testing and tuning at our garage in Seaford, Sussex, we often get hired for meets, shows and track days, where we’re generally open to any attendee who wants an official note of what their vehicle is pushing out; but did you know that we can assist with the pre-event scrutnineering process too?

This year, our first scrutineering style hire came from the incredible organisers of the Dream Honda Vtec Challenge (with whom the BARC Saloons Championship also participate) and the Classic VW Cup team. The guys booked us for not one, not two, but 5 of their events, the first of which was held at Brands Hatch.

Here’s what went up (because things don’t go down in our game).

What is Scrutineering in Motorsport?

In case you didn’t know, a scrutineer is a person who observes any process which requires rigorous oversight, either to prevent the occurrence of corruption or, genuine mistakes.

In motorsport, scrutineers play an important role as racing series typically have a set of technical regulations to which the cars, bikes or other vehicles must conform. The role of the scrutineer in this case is to confirm that vehicles entered for the race meet the relevant regulations.

Dyno Driven and the Scrutineering Process

This Saturday and Sunday the 12th and 13th of May, Dyno Driven joined the Dream Honda Vtec Challenge, BARC Saloons and Classic VW Cup organisers and involved teams to assist their official scrutineers in recording the bhp of each competitor’s vehicles. We also helped out remapping the vehicles who wanted to push themselves a bit more within regulations.

Our mobile Dyno kit can take up to 2,000 bhp and 200mph so we are well equipped to help most teams with this part of their race preparations. Championship organisers are able to book us to work with the teams on site on the days leading up to races, this helps to ensure that all teams are tested fairly and precisely in the same way.

About the Races

We have to say that this event has been one of our favourites to date with cudos going out to everyone involved. All teams were great to deal with, the cars were some of Joe (a Honda enthusiast’s) favourite and we even got stuck in helping one of the teams fit their gearbox! Joe again! When he’s not working, he’s working.

The Dream Honda VTec Challenge and the Classic VW Championships are run as regular championships but as a buck to the trend we also got to learn how the BARC Saloons Championship works. Although we did Dyno some of their cars, it was only for the team’s interest as with this one there are no restrictions other than, the car you enter must be a 4-seater saloon.

These guys haven’t just ripped up the rule book, they’ve set fire to anything else that was left of it as, in addition to their no vehicle restrictions policy, they also don’t give points to the winner! At the end of each race, points are drawn out of a hat and allocated to each team and at the end of the season the team with the lowest points wins. Simples! (kind of)

After letting it sink in for a while we think we can get on board with the concept. The BARC Saloons Championship gives start-up teams and those with a smaller budget the chance of winning and, even if it’s just based on the luck of the draw, a trophy is a trophy, and everyone has gained experience. So, if it discourages cheque-book racing and brings fun and accessibility to the track then we’re 100% behind it.

All three championships gave us great vehicles and even better racing. Huge shout-outs to Ben Rushworth who was the run-away victor in the Honda set, and Brad Kaylor and Ken Lark who won race 1 and race 2 respectively in the Classic VW Cup.
